林兆华戏剧工作室形成于1989年,1990年正式成立,2003年申办成立戏剧演出团体,多年来致力创作属于中国的现代戏剧形式和美学。林兆华戏剧工作室长期合作伙伴包括著名剧作家高行健、过士行以及戏曲编剧徐瑛,中国顶尖的舞美及灯光设计者易立明、曾力、王音,以及中国一流的演员濮存昕、梁冠华、宋丹丹、何冰、徐帆等人。
工作室成立缘起于80年代初期,林兆华和高行健合作实验戏剧期间出于对戏剧创作自由的需求,二人酝酿成立独立戏剧工作室,但由于当时大环境不成熟而未能实现。1985年荷兰电影大师伊文斯 (Joris Ivens) 在北京观看林兆华所执导的高行健之《野人》,演出后上台祝贺演员时兴奋的哭了,说“我想在电影中实现的,你在舞台上已经做到了。”美国的基督教箴言报更是以“令人震惊”来形容此剧。由此触发林兆华意识到中国人应当、而且也有能力创立中国自己的导表演学派。于是林兆华在1989年开始运作独立工作室,目的在于不受旧体制约束,自由地选择剧目,尤其是国内外的经典名著。同时他希望透过这些作品对未来的戏剧进行多方位的探索,实践80年代初期产生的全能戏剧观念。他相信透过全能戏剧的实践可以产生属于中国的当代戏剧,多年来在工作室的舞台作品皆朝此方向创作和探索。
林兆华在工作室成立17年以来创作出在剧场美学上有独特品格的作品,如《哈姆雷特》、《罗慕洛斯大帝》、《浮士德》、《棋人》、《三姊妹•等待戈多》、《故事新编》、《理查三世》、《樱桃园》、《建筑大师》、《刺客》等作品,不仅在国内外引起争议,同时也都得到高度的赞誉。在这些作品中,林兆华不仅表现人在社会的处境以及他对生命的态度,同时也试图探索属于中国当代戏剧独有的导表演方法。
除林兆华的戏剧创作外,林兆华戏剧工作室未来的发展将致力于培养与挖掘中国年轻一代的戏剧创作者、参与国际交流演出、邀请国外当代著名剧作家和导演作品至中国展演,以及邀请海外著名表导演艺术家至中国为年轻戏剧人进行工作坊训练,期望未来的中国戏剧能在与世界的直接对话中得到发展。
Lin Zhaohua Theatre Studio
The Lin Zhaohua Theatre Studio, formed in 1989, is one of the longest-running independent modern theatre groups in China. The major goal of the Studio is to create and develop a uniquely Chinese form of modern theatre. Long-term affiliates of the Studio have included playwrights Gao Xingjian, Guo Shixing, and Peking Opera playwright Xu Ying; China’s best lighting and scene designers Yi Liming, Zeng Li, and Wang Yin; as well as the great theatre actors and actresses Pu Cunxin, Liang Guanhua, Song Dandan, He Bing, and Xu Fan.
The origins of the Studio can be traced back to the early 1980’s, when Lin collaborated with Gao Xingjian to engage in experimental theatre. Out of a thirst for creative freedom, they yearned to establish their own theatre studio. However, this wasn’t achievable at the time. In 1985, Holland’s film director Joris Ivens watched Lin’s work Wildman, written by Gao, and proclaimed that the play expressed what he wasn’t able to express in film. Ivens’ words inspired Lin to believe that China ought to develop its own form of modern theatre. Thus, he started the Studio in 1989, so that his art could be liberated from the control of the old system, and he could freely choose his own material, especially classic Chinese and foreign plays.
Lin enthusiastically explored innovative dramatic possibilities through the idea of omnipotent theatre inspired by Chinese traditional theatre, established in collaboration with Gao in the early 80s. He believed that the omnipotent theatre could help instigate the emergence of a uniquely Chinese form of modern theatre. This has always been the goal of the Studio. The works of the Studio, such as Hamlet, Romulus the Great, Faust, Chess Man, The Three Sisters.Waiting for Godot, A Parody 2000, Richard the Third, Cherry Orchard, The Master Builder, and The Assassin not only illuminate the human condition, but also synthesize diverse artist forms, Western and Chinese, traditional and modern. Through these experiments, Lin not only took a significant step away from the aesthetics of established classical Chinese modern theatre, but has gone on to create a contemporary Chinese theatre form that is autonomous of Western theatre.
In addition to continuing to produce Lin’s work, the Studio devotes its time to fostering and unearthing neglected theatre talent, seeking to premiere the works of young Chinese artists. Moreover, in order to promote interaction between Chinese and world theatre, the Studio is highly involved in international theatre exchange, and has invited renowned international theatre groups and artists to hold workshops and direct plays in China, including Theatre O from the UK, Thomas Ostermeier from Germany, Le Théatre du Rond Point, Jacques Lassalle and Saint-Etienne from France, and Charlie Oates and Peter Francis James from the USA.
