Bridget: Another year, a brand new diary. Once again I was summoned, kicking and screaming, to my mother's turkey curry buffet, where I've had some of the most shaming experiences of my life.

Bridget: It was, as usual, crammed full with some of the most dangerous perverts in the UK, disguised as close, personal friends of my parents.

1．jumper
jumper在特定的场合有着特定的意思。
A：跳跃者
He's a great jumper. 意思就是他跳得很高。在英文中这样的用法很多，在动词后面加上er代表一定的特征。举个很简单的例子，在《毕业生》这部电影中，Ben曾经说过这样一句话：He certainly is a good walker。意思就是说这人走的很快。

这是在本片中的用法。My mother's taste never falters. 意思就是“我妈是个相当有品味的人”。也可说 His reputation never falters. 大家可以用不同的词来替换，关键是要把它变成自己的语言。
3．Nothing in the world can spoil it.
spoil这个词有“宠坏”和“破坏”两种意思，影片中用的是后者。
4．get sacked
很地道的表达方式，意思是“被解雇”。比如一个好友情绪低落，追问原因，才得知She's got sacked. 这个时候你就得多安慰她了。
5. You're on.
on 是很小的一个词，同时也是很难用的词，因为它的意思实在是太多了。在这里on是当“上场，开演了， 开始了”讲。 You're on意思就是“你上场了，已经开拍了”。What's on？就是“演什么呢？”
6．You're live.

“毫无头绪”的意思，有时候也说成not have a clue。这是在口语里经常使用的句子，大家可以试着多多使用。

If you say there is not an iota or not one iota of something, you are emphasizing that there is not even a very small amount of it.

2. on one's way
这是口语里常用的一个片语，除了表示one one's way to（在去……的路上）的意思外，还可以表示“离开”，比如 She is on her way out the door. On your way 还可以单用，是一种命令的口气，要求别人“走开，离开”。本段中的 He's on his way. 意思就是“他离开了”。
3. A couple of stitches
很随意的一种说法，意思是“只是缝了几针”。“拆线”可说成是 stitches out。
4. Stay away from
“避开，远离”的意思。例如：You ought to stay away from me. I have a bad cold and wouldn't want you to catch it. 你该离我远点，我感冒很严重，不想传染给你。
5. Over something / somebody

1． Never can tell.

从字面上不难看出它的意思：薪水低、不被人尊重的工作。这是一种很好的表达方式。当说到一个人的工作很不好的时候，一定要记住，用low-paying, zero-respect job 要比 bad job 好很多。顺便提一句，与low-paying, zero-respect job 相反的就是下文 Michael 提到的 sell-out establishment job。
6. roll over and drool

4． Two-faced

At last it's time for the wedding. Although most weddings follow long-held traditions, there's still room for American individualism. For example, the usual place for a wedding is in a church. But some people get married outdoors in a scenic spot. A few even have the ceremony while skydiving or riding on horseback! The couple may invite hundreds of people or just a few close friends. They choose their own style of colors, decorations and music during the ceremony. But some things rarely change. The bride usually wears a beautiful, long white wedding dress. She traditionally wears "something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue." The groom wears a formal suit or tuxedo. Several close friends participate in the ceremony as attendants, including the best man and the maid of honor.
As the ceremony begins, the groom and his attendants stand with the minister, facing the audience. Music signals the entrance of the bride's attendants, followed by the beautiful bride. Nervously, the young couple repeats their vows. Traditionally, they promise to love each other "for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health." But sometimes the couple has composed their own vows. They give each other a gold ring to symbolize their marriage commitment. Finally the minister announces the big moment: "I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss your bride!"
At the wedding reception, the bride and groom greet their guests. Then they cut the wedding cake and feed each other a bite. Guests mingle while enjoying cake, punch and other treats. Later the bride throws her bouquet of flowers to a group of single girls. Tradition says that the one who catches the bouquet will be the next to marry. During the reception, playful friends "decorate" the couple's car with tissue paper, tin cans and a "Just Married" sign. Energetic red-haired leading lady Susan Hayward (born Edythe Marrener) specialized in portraying gutsy women who rebound from adversity. 1. Moon over somebody

Amen 阿门
“阿门”这个词，是基督徒祷告后必说的词，以此作为祷词的结束语。它在希伯来语中的意思是“就是如此”或“愿其如此”。由于在《旧约》中常用，在以后基督徒的宗教生活中，也就一直也被广大基督徒所使用。
“阿门”在《旧约》中用来做赞颂的结束语，就像我们在通常的祷词和赞美诗中所见到的那样。另外，许愿的时候也要说“阿门”，表示确定所许的愿。在《旧约》中，摩西每讲一句话，会众都说“阿门”，说明以色列民众对上帝话语的认可。
以色列人说的每一个阿门，都是在上帝面前的一种坚信与承诺。他们坚信上帝所启示的话语是于他们有利的，要叫他们分别为圣，要叫他们蒙福；他们承诺自己要听从上帝的话语，遵行上帝的话语，见证上帝的话语。

1、崔斯汀的传奇
我一直认为我所扮演过的大多数角色都能找到更合适的人选来演，惟独崔斯汀这个角色，我知道我是最佳人选。从我第一次看到剧本时就知道，我了解他的行为、他的心态，我的挑战是如何让观众也能认同我对他的看法。

有一种人，天生血液里就流淌着不安分的成分。这样的人，注定要颠沛流离地过一生。这部电影的名字叫做 Legends of the fall，它讲的就是崔斯汀的传奇。崔斯汀是一个在军人和猎人的教育下长大的人，他从印第安人一刺那里学到捕猎的乐趣，征服自然、征服一切的欲望常在他心中涌动。崔斯汀也是纯真的，他更像一个与自然尚未完全分开的个体。
在影片中崔斯汀有三次重要的出场，每一次都是骑马前来。第一次是见到苏姗娜，崔斯汀骑着马出现在草原上，飘散的金发迷人的笑容令她一见钟情；第二次是在战争结束后回家，依然是骑马而来，令家人欢呼雀跃；第三次，则是在自我放逐多年后，又一次骑着马出现在家人的面前，物是人非，百感交集。但是这三次的场面几乎如出一辙，都是随着激扬的音乐，一头长发的崔斯汀骑着骏马慢慢浮出地平线，宛如一个受到万众期待的英雄。可是，崔斯汀却又够不上我们常理中认定的英雄：为国为家，侠之大者。崔斯汀驯服烈马只是为了征服它，参加一战也只是为了照顾萨缪尔和追求做英雄的快感，当然不可否认也有逃避多角恋爱的目的，杀死霸道的显贵是为了给自己的妻子报仇。他从没有干出什么惊天动地的事业。
但这并不意味片名中的“Legends”名不符实，我们依然可以把崔斯汀视做一个“传奇”。因为他的故事是一个平凡人所能达到的“传奇”。他的一生，以和熊的关联开始，也以和熊的搏斗结束。在这中间，他经历了爱情、战争、自我放逐和短暂的平静幸福。当他死在熊爪之下时，一个似乎遥远的童话就此结束了，燃情岁月一去不返。
2、苏珊娜的悲剧
在这个片断中，家庭晚宴的时候，当苏珊娜入座后，一家人一起给她拿东西吃，足以预示她日后将给这个家庭带来的感情纠葛。

禁酒法案是美国宪法史上最短命的一条宪法修正案。该修正案于1919年通过，到1933年废除，像一场儿戏。禁酒法案规定：凡是制造、售卖乃至于运输酒精含量超过0.5%以上的饮料皆属违法。自己在家里喝酒不算犯法，但与朋友共饮或举行酒宴则属违法，最高可被罚款1000美元及监禁半年。
美国人向酒宣战的背后是清教徒狂热的宗教热情和追求至善的道德导向。美国的早期移民大多是清教徒，他们力主敬畏上帝、清廉度日。到19世纪中期，美国一些地方的居民开始用法律手段约束贪杯之人，这种呼声渐渐得到全国范围的呼应，以维护传统家庭为己任的妇女组织更是其中的主力军。这个民间运动时起时伏，绵延不绝，终于在20世纪初掀起大潮。

对这部影片的评价，曾经有一句话说它是 A passionate journey into the darkest secrets of love, betrayal and the unbreakable bonds of blood. 这句话绝好的概括了影片的主题。
《票房》杂志1995年2月号评论到：《LEGENDS OF THE FALL》是一部色彩鲜艳、华丽的作品，它有详尽的细节描写和丰富的感情色彩。布拉德·皮特……在本片中的表演十分出色。他一出现就有强烈的吸引力，令人回想起他在另一部蒙大拿的历史剧《大河恋》中的出色表演。女演员朱莉娅·奥蒙德在LEGENDS OF THE FALL中塑造了一个有血有肉、形象丰满的苏珊娜。但是，由于受到剧本的限制，所以她没有更多发挥余地。尽管如此，崔斯汀和苏珊娜的爱情仍然使人十分信服，它作为影片的主线将发生在如此漫长时间里的众多事件有机地连接在一起了。

但是，令很多影迷遗憾至今的是，这部电影一个奖项也没捞到。这又是为什么呢？
其实，这部电影没得奖是有深刻原因的！皆因电影反映了一个逆世界大潮的主题。是什么呢？
就是崔斯汀对动物的血腥杀戮！崔斯汀爱打猎，以征服自然为自己的目的。自从一刺教给他杀戮的乐趣后，他就不断地打猎，连熊也要碰一碰。他离家出走去非洲的时候，在非洲大陆上不知屠杀了多少动物。在家信中，他还向一刺炫耀他猎杀了很多从来没见过的动物。这些想必都是非洲的特产、珍稀物种。没准现在那么多动物灭绝，他当年的杀戮也是要负点责任的。电影不但不批判这种毁坏珍惜动物、促成物种灭绝的行为，反而称赞这是“帮它们的灵魂获得自由”的善举！
光是宣扬这荒谬的理论还不止，影片还用了不少血腥镜头来展示崔斯汀的战果，真是触目惊心啊！那匹可怜的斑马躺在地上被人开膛破肚的样子，谁看了都要掩面。
如此名目仗胆的宣扬屠杀动物的行为岂能不受到全世界动物爱好者、保护者的反对？就是非动物保护者看了也要动容。奥斯卡和金球的评委们不会不注意到这个逆公众潮流的论调，所以，很英明的没有把奖项颁给这部电影，实在是眼光长远，要不然，还不得被现在狂热的动物保护主义者口诛笔伐、围追堵截啊！> 删除 -

酒店业在国外非常发达。旅馆，酒店的前台接待员hotel receptionists都训练有素。影片中的Room clerk也是一种接待员。他们还有不同级别，如shift leader or supervisor, head receptionist。
A receptionist is the first person that hotel guests see or talk to when they arrive or ring to make a booking. A hotel receptionist therefore has an important job of making people feel welcome (让人有宾至如归的感觉), being efficient and dealing professionally with enquiries（问询）. In this work the tasks are likely to include welcoming guests as they arrive, allocating them a room and handing out keys to guests or porters，taking and passing on messages. He will probably also have to put together the guest's bill, take payment and help guests with any special requests. 1. pedigree
这是一个相对比较正式的单词，意思一般是“出身；家族；血统；门第”等。当然在指动物时一般是指“纯种”。这种词在题材相对严肃的影片中比较容易遇到。给大家举几个例子以便更容易记住它：
1） A penniless lass with a long pedigree and a sweet face, she had been raised by a scheming aunt to find a million dollars and marry it.
这位小姑娘虽然一贫如洗，却是世家出身，由姑母抚养大，长得俏丽动人。这位长辈颇有心计，一心想让侄女嫁个百万富翁。
2）He comes from a family of pedigree.
他出身名门。
2. Katherine Watson didn't come to Wellesley to fit in.
这个句子的意思是：凯瑟琳·华森到韦尔斯利学院并非是来融入其中的。这种句式是英语中的一种常见句式，我们称之为否定转移句。此句里的否定不是针对come，而是否定fit in的。类似的句子有很多，比如：

3. Terrific
口语中极常见的感叹词，意思一般是“好极了，棒极了，太漂亮了”等等。我们再积累一些类似表达的词汇，如：
Gorgeous, fantastic, amazing, superb, fabulous, wonderful, marvelous 等等，这些词在口语中本身就可以构成单字的句子，通常表示感叹。
4. I'm dying to meet her.
相信大家一看这个句子就理解它的意思了，因为非常形象。当我们想表达对什么事情的急切和渴望的心情的时候，就可以用这种夸张的说法。意思是very eager to do sth.
如：She's dying to leave for Paris.
她非常想去巴黎。
Ｉam dying to watch the movie adapted from my favorite novel.

Bohemian 波希米亚

1. Collect
这实际上是一个很简单的词，希望大家了解这个熟悉的词的比较容易被忽略的一个意思：由对方支付费用的。Collect 本来是一个副词，但是在口语里演变为名词用法，等于省略的a collect phone call。所以以后当大家自己在电话中听到了这个词的时候，要明白这是要你自己付钱的电话哦。
2. Tough
在这个片段里这个单词的意思是“艰难；棘手”。但这实在是一个意思很多变的词，所以想用几个例子给大家加深一下印象：
She is a tough mother to her only son. 对于唯一的儿子来说，她是个严厉的母亲。
But she is also a tough customer while shopping. 但是购物的时候，她也是个难伺候的顾客。
The beef we are eating is tough. 我们吃的牛肉有点嚼不动。

3. I'm babbling.

1. grotesque
这是这部电影里经常碰到的一个单词，意思是“(风格)奇异，古怪，荒诞的”。我们来看个例子：Everything seemed strange, so tawdry and grotesque. 一切都很新奇，很花哨，有点滑稽可笑。
在口语中还有一些其它常用的词来表示“奇怪的”这一意思的词，出现频率都很高。比如 weird，如：Sabrina went out with Linus? That's too weird. 莎宾娜和莱纳斯出去约会了？简直太奇怪了！
Strange，这是一个大熟词，就不举例子了。
Odd，如 It's odd that she should have kept such an ugly name as Ellen. 真奇怪她居然一直用埃伦这么个难听的名字。
Bizarre，如：For him, it was a bizarre and tedious experience. 对他来说这是一次奇特而又乏味的经历。
2. aggressive
这个单词不知道怎么回事，很容易被大家记住的意思是“侵略性的，攻击性的”，因而我们经常把它当作贬义词来使用。但是在英语中，尤其在美语中，这个词还有另一个常用意思是“大胆的，积极进取的”。所以这个词在本片段中的意思就不是侵略性的，而是“前卫的，大胆的”。
e.g. He is an aggressive young executive. 他是一个进取心很强的年轻管理员。
3. much less
这是一个固定表达，意思是“何况，更不要说……” 相当于let alone，例如：
1) I didn't even see your brother, much less speak to him. 我连见都没见过你弟弟，更别说跟他说话了。
2) I dare not speak to him, much less express my feelings to him. 我连话都不敢跟他说，更别说是表达感情了。
4. look beyond the paint
此句的意思是：别拘泥于图像本身。
很明显，这个句子中的关键词是beyond，在这里提出来是希望大家注意这个单词的意思在翻译的时候非常灵活，在本句里取的就是这个单词的基本词义：超越。我们可以看看一些其它的例子：
1）It's quite beyond me why she married such a heavy smoker.
我实在无法理解为什么她会嫁给这样一个烟鬼。
2) Understanding this article is beyond my capacity. 我看不懂这篇文章。

fix这个词还有个常用意思是“修理”，引申的意思为“康复”。如：

3. It slipped。
我说漏嘴了。
Slip的意思很多，最常用的意思是：滑、溜、失足、纰漏、失误等。我们可以通过以下例子体会这个词的意思。
1) a slip of tongue 说漏嘴了；口误
a slip of pen 笔误
2）He was in two minds on that chance, which resulted in having let it slip through his fingers. 由于他当时犹豫不决而眼睁睁错过了最后的机会。
4. Are you in？
你来吗？
这个表达的肯定形式是 I'm in. 表示“我参加；我加入；算我一个”。这又是一个口语短句，在口语中还有类似的表达，如：Count me in. 也是“算我一个”的意思。其相反意思的表达是：Count me out.
5. She wears his pin.
这句话表面的意思是“她带了他的徽章”。Pin 在这里的意思是：a fraternity pin gave to (a woman) in token of attachment. 定情物（将自己大学联谊会会徽送女人作为定情物）
所以在这里这句话的含义是“她已经带上了他的定情信物”，或者“他们俩已经定下终身”。

Sean Connery 真正的明星——肖恩·康纳利
Sean Connery was the first, and is possibly still the most beloved, of the actors to play superspy James Bond in feature films. Connery was a bodybuilder who turned to acting, making his way into the movies in the late 1950s. In 1963 he starred as Bond in Dr. No, and by 1971 he had appeared in five more Bond movies, quitting the role after Diamonds Are Forever.
