Please spell: “guerdon.”
“Again, [the kingdom of heaven] will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them.” - Matthew 25:14
Have you ever watched part of the National Spelling Bee competition? Grade school children spell words I’ve never even heard before. As these young kids often spell these brutal words with ease, they show that they often also know the definition, usage and etymology of the word. If you took one of those kids and some random child from your local school, who would you expect to know more words? To finish a crossword puzzle better? To not need the “spell-check” function when typing a paper? You would expect more “word excellence” from the one breezing through the Spelling Bee. More talent and skill = more expectations.
God is the giver of every good gift, including people’s talents, abilities, possessions and wealth. What does God expect of you? God expects you to use those gifts faithfully in a God-pleasing way. God is not happy when people take his gifts and refuse to use them faithfully.
God blesses us with tongues that can speak. Then we use our words to cut down others, or we sit silently when we see someone who could use encouragement. God blesses us with time. Then we fritter time away in laziness or in sinful activities. God blesses us with possessions. And we refuse to use them to help others. Whenever we fail to use God’s gifts in a good way, we sin against God.
God is a very, very gracious giver. God gives you all your talents, abilities, possessions and wealth, and he also gave you a Savior. So that God would see you as holy, God’s Son, Jesus, gave his whole life in holy service to others and perfect obedience to his Father. So that you would be forgiven, Jesus suffered for all your sins and died on the cross. So that you would have peace and eternal life, Jesus rose to life and now reigns over all things.
How can you say thanks to God? Should it be the exact same way I say thank you to God?
Just as God didn’t give the same spelling ability to everyone, God also doesn’t give the same amount of possessions or talents to each individual. God has blessed you differently than he has blessed me. He expects something different from you than from me. But God does want you and me to both use what he has given each of us faithfully. You can say thanks to your loving, faithful God by being the best employer or employee you can be, by being as encouraging as you can, by loving others with all that God has given to you, and , yes, by spelling as well as you can spell.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, you have graciously blessed me with so many good things. Forgive me for the times I’ve used your blessings selfishly or sinfully. Thank you for forgiving me because of Jesus’ perfect, faithful life and death. Help me to live each day in joyful thanks for all you’ve done for me. Help me to faithfully use all the blessings you give me to the best of my abilities. Amen.
