Nearly a century ago, George Ernest Morrison (b. 1862; d.1920) was an Australian adventurer who became The Times Peking correspondent and later a political adviser to the government of the Republic of China. Known as "Morrison of China," "Morrison of Peking" or "Pioneer of Cultural Exchange between China and Australia," he worked and lived in China for more than two decades from1897 to 1918. Wangfujing Dajie, where Morrison once lived, is often called "Morrison Dajie", which demonstrates the importance of his contribution to Beijing. Regretfully however, Morrison has been long neglected by historians. This lecture will examine the ties between China and Morrison, and reveal formerly misunderstood or misinterpreted historical facts, such as the truth of the events surrounding Morrison and the Russo-Japanese War, how Morrison unveiled the "21 Demands" which Japan forced China to accept, the precise location of Morrison's house on Wanfujing Dajie, and the story behind why it was nicknamed “Morrison Dajie”. In his leisure time, Morrison had several few hobbies, including traveling and book-collecting, which after his death, formed the Morrison Library, and was the largest ever collection of Chinese history books. This lecture will also discuss Morrison's character, take the audience through his complicated life journey, and analyze the significance of his life in the context of modern Chinese history.
