    Superstitions

From Howls and Whispers (1998)

Friday created Adam. Cast out Adam.
Buried Adam. Friday. Today. Friday

The thirteenth was laughter of the drunken gods
So lightly reversed by Loki’s gift:
Spermy mistletoe and a ship of tinder.

Friday the thirteenth. A fable told
Of the bloodied halo, the sponge, and the nail.

And Friday the thirteenth unveiled perfumed
America. (Lifting the eyelid
Of Columbus
With the chains from his coffin.)

Friday the thirteenth
Prestidigitateur
May find odds and ends, even for you.

Maybe Frigga’s
Two-faced gift. The cauldron of Valhalla,
Where warriors were reborn.

Under the cold
Epicanthic fold lifted in the bride’s
Mirror, a cauldron
where this one
Forgot death. Where that one
Forgot life. Where this other
Sank without a cry.
Let them laugh
At your superstition.

(Remembering it will make your palms sweat,
The skin lift blistering, both your lifelines bleed.)

Capriccios.

Superstitions.
