The City Inside the River
Seeing the sights
In the morning, I saw freshly baked French bread on almost every street corner. Of course, traditional Vietnamese food is also widely available here. Hanoi is famous for pho, a steaming noodle soup flavored with cilantro and lime.
After a delicious lunch, my friends and I went to see the sights of Hanoi. We enjoyed a water puppet performance, a traditional art form that originated in Hanoi. The puppets move gracefully on a “stage” of water. Their reflections in the water add to the beauty of the show.
Our visit to the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum was an interesting experience. I learned that many Vietnamese people still greatly revere Ho Chi Minh as the father of their country.
We were also intrigued by a visit to Hoa Lo prison, now a museum. This prison was built by the French to hold Vietnamese criminals. Later on, it also held American prisoners of war. The American soldiers sarcastically nicknamed it the “Hanoi Hilton.” The photos on display revealed that the conditions were anything but comfortable.
