[zz] WHAT IS SOUND ART? (豆瓣 声音艺术小组)

Re: [soundasart] Re: [phonography] WHAT IS SOUND ART?

hi catarina (and bill),

i wrote this essay in 2005, which on one hand attempts to define sound art
and on the other hand suggests such definitions get in a way. it is a
fumbling piece of writing, but perhaps would be of interest to you -

http://www.inbetweennoise.com/activelistening.html

it was written for the catalog of an exhibition called soundwalk, which
takes place in public sites in downtown long beach california. the piece was
somewhat inspired by being part of a group of "sound artists" walking around
the area to determine public sites for the installation of their works.

be warned, i do use the M word a lot :-)

> Hi Catrina,
>
> You might pose this question on the soundasart list as well, as it's been
> discussed there at the beginning of that list's life: <
> soundasart@yahoogroups.com>, there's also a booklist from when the list
> began as well...personally, I find it a very useful term, but can get a bit
> annoyed when certain people 're-brand' themselves as sound artists even
> though their practice doesn't reflect it etc...can o'worms, I know...
>
> Bill
>
> ps...I'll try to post a response as soon as I can, I'm on holiday and have
> restricted time on the internet at the moment...

>> Hello everyone,
>>
>> I'm currently writing a dissertation where I am analyzing and questioning
>> the use and definition of the term Sound Art. It is a term that seems to be
>> very "fashionable" nowadays but the way it is used and what is it used for
>> to me seems to be unclear, confusing and at times useless.
>>
>> Thought I would put a post out to see if anyone would like to share some
>> opinions and ideas about this subject or knows of any useful websites, books
>> or people I could look at in connection to this matter.
>>
>> Thanks,
>>
