WANTOK - THE SOLOMON ISLANDS

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

About the Exhibition
Captured in the exhibition is a unique and intimate portrait of the Solomon Island people and their culture.
The Solomon Islands, situated in the South Pacific off the east of Papua New Guinea and northeast of Australia, is made up of more than 990 mountainous islands and low-lying coral cays.
The exhibition features photographs taken in Guadalcanal, Honiara, China Town, Nendo Island, Morova Lagoon, Gizo Island, Munda, Vella Lavella, Kolombangara Island, and Mt Rano.
Photographing the Solomon Islands has been a personal project of Elliot’s since 2004. Elliot is well known and respected in the Solomon Islands through his extensive travels and understanding of local language and Solomon Islands culture.
Meaning of ‘Wantok’ - There are more than 200 distinctive languages spoken in the Solomon Islands. The Wantok system is an unwritten social contract, between people that speak the same language, to support each other in times of need.
From the Photographer – Elliot Spencer
“I first discovered the Solomon Islands in 2004 when I sailed on a small yacht direct from Australia to the Santa Cruz Islands, the most eastern part of the country.
When I arrived I quickly felt a deep love and respect for Solomon Islands people and their culture. I spent 6 months island hopping around the country – including paddling Morova Lagoon by traditional canoe - during which time I learned the local language Pidgin English and formed strong and enduring friendships. In 2009 I returned to the Solomon Islands to see my friends and to capture through photography the Solomon Islands people and their culture.
The exhibition is made up of a selection of my favorite images. Each image tells its own individual story and the collection together gives a comprehensive documentation of a truly rare and distinctive traditional culture”.
