For the first time, an entire Sydney suburb is being transformed into an art exhibition to debut the Grand Tour Gallery, a new outdoor exhibition space that spans the entire suburb of Glebe. To celebrate the launch, 150 life-size photographic portraits showcasing Glebe's vibrant community will be displayed throughout the suburb as part of a unique exhibition titled 150 Locals, which will run from the 24th October to 28th November 2009.
The photographs, taken by well-respected Australian photographers North Sullivan and Tom Psomotragos, will be exhibited across nearly 60 locations, including outdoor public spaces, apartment facades, shop windows and cafes, to literally transform Glebe into an outdoor art gallery for one month. With a number of photographs as large as 1600mm x 1000mm, 150 Locals is set to become one of the largest photographic exhibitions of its kind in Sydney.
Artist Reg Mombassa, honky-tonk piano player Bridie King, and author Peter Corris of the Cliff Hardy series are among the 150 Glebe locals that will be featured in the exhibition. Nearly 110 photographic portraits will be displayed outdoors on 1600mm x 1000mm canvas sheets while the remainder will be exhibited on 1095mm x 1095mm canvases in numerous cafes and retail outlets.
The Grand Tour Gallery is a new annual initiative of the Glebe Chamber of Commerce to provide a public space for Australian photographers to showcase their photographic artworks. 150 Locals was chosen as the theme for the inaugural Grand Tour exhibition to coincide with Glebe's 150th birthday, and celebrate the suburb's diversity.
The 150 Locals exhibition showcases 50 photographs by North Sullivan and 100 black and white photographs by Tom Psomotragos. Both photographers are passionate Glebe locals, and have taken a unique approach to their work.
As one of Australia's most respected advertising photographers, North Sullivan launched the famous Qantas Choir, the GMC Envoy and the AMP's Olympic Torch Relay, and is also the founder of The Fuji ACMP Australian Photographers' Collection.
Creating images that have been described as revealing inner, mythical, worldly and intensely human concerns, Tom Psomotragos is a respected photographer with a breadth of experience. His works have been shown in the National Gallery of Victoria, Christine Abrahams Gallery in Melbourne and the Art Gallery of NSW.
The 150 Locals exhibition will also run in tandem with the annual Glebe Street Fair held on the 15th November, 2009.
HP is the production sponsor for the 150 Locals exhibition, and will be producing all 150 life-size portraits using the latest environmentally friendly printing technologies. The outdoor displays will be produced using HP Latex Ink Technology, which enables the production of high quality signage that is gentle on the environment, while the indoor photographs will be produced with the HP Designjet Z3200 photo printer.
